Richard Réti is one of the most fascinating characters in the history of chess. He developed theories that were regarded as little less than revolutionary in his era — asserting that, contrary to classical principles, the centre need not be occupied by pawns. This was considered heresy by the classically-minded grandmasters of his day.
This bold new approach was dubbed Hypermodern and led to the development of the Réti Opening (1.Nf3). His theories have since been proved sound, stood the test of time, and inspired generations of players. Réti scored many fine wins against the great players of his era.
