Description
Today's opening repertoire demands more than a slight theoretical edge — it needs to be sound, low-maintenance, and practically dangerous. The Trompowsky Attack (1.d4 ...2.Bg5!) answers all of these requirements, and IM Robert Ris shows you exactly how to wield it.
Once popular in the 1980s, the Trompowsky is making a powerful comeback at the elite level, with Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov all employing it regularly. It's especially effective at faster time controls, where you push your opponent out of their comfort zone as early as move two — without requiring endless memorisation of theoretical lines.
- Key advantages: Sound, sustainable, minimal memorisation, early pressure on the opponent
- Especially effective: Rapid and blitz time controls
