Description
The QGD Exchange Variation. An Opening of Champions, for Both Colours.
The Queen's Gambit Declined Exchange Variation is truly an opening of champions. Kasparov, Botvinnik, and Reshevsky have wielded it with White; Karpov, Spassky, and Keres have defended it with Black. Its asymmetrical pawn structure — arising from an early resolution of central tension — creates a rich variety of plans and ideas for both sides.
In this Fritz Trainer course, GM Nigel Davies explains the key strategies in depth through a series of instructive games. White's most traditional approach is the minority attack, extending influence along the half-open c-file. But sharper options are also available: advancing the central pawn majority or even castling long for a kingside pawn storm. Davies also shows how these plans transfer to similar pawn structures in the Grünfeld Defence and Caro-Kann — making this course valuable for anyone looking to improve their strategic understanding of chess.
What's Covered (4 hours):
- The minority attack — White's most powerful and traditional plan in the Exchange
- Advancing the central pawn majority and castling long for a kingside storm
- Plans for both colours — how to play and how to meet each approach
- Structural parallels in the Grünfeld Defence and Caro-Kann — broader strategic value
