GM Viktor Bologan came to the Nimzo-Indian late — and he regrets it. After years playing the King's Indian and Black's Knights Tango, he finally added the Nimzo to his repertoire in the new millennium, a period that coincided with his victory at the prestigious Dortmund 2003 tournament, where he held Kramnik with Black in the decisive final round.
The Nimzo-Indian teaches one of chess's most important skills: how to play with the knight against the bishop. Bologan recommends it to players of all levels, calling it as fundamental as the Ruy Lopez after 1.e4. This course gives Black a clear, structured approach against 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 — considered White's strongest move order.
