Now we come to day 2. Day 1 was great for Parry's team#1...but Lohrman's team #2 was swept the the first round but we came back with a score of 3-1 to win in the second round. A good night of sleep and some tremendous food at the diner got us ready for the day.
Day 2 saw Parry's team in the roped off area on board #3. They had the fun of playing a team with a 2199 average rating. Matt won his game with spectacular play and Steve got a draw. Unfortunately Craig and Ben lost 2 hard fought games and they lost the match.

But Round 3 was fun for the Lohrman - Hiltunen team. We got to play down(a 1400+ rated team.) Phelps played a impressive game. We'll have the game posted later. Ron had his king stranded in the middle the whole game, but he knew the book better than his competition. James had a piece sacked on him early, but they never thought it completely thru. James played up a piece for a pawn the rest of the game and ground the guy down. Shelby played a 1300 rated player who had never seen his favorite Pirc variation. Needless to say...we swept the match 4-0.

By the way...we ran into some of our friends at the tournament. Make sure to check out the pics of Kunal Lobo and our buddy Harrison.

WOW, the 4th round was hard. We somehow found our way to playing the top 2-1 team....we just can't catch any breaks. Their team rating was 2197. Their top 2 boards looked like they got no sleep for the past couple of days too! Just goes to show you that you can't judge a book by the cover. Ron had an amazing win against a 2200. I don't think the poor guy knew what hit him. Phelps learned that when playing up to stay in lines you know. The yellow Ultimate set has not brought him any luck so far. James stood his ground against a 2400 but ultimately lost a grinder. And me, your humble reporter had the fun of playing someone rated 600 points higher. I had a great game, but allowing him to simplify taking the last minor pieces off the board led to my demise.
The Parry team learned the hard way...you don't want to sit down across from a team of scholastic age Asian kids. Matt drew, Ben lost, Craig won and it was down to Steve. I went to sleep before it was over. Somehow it seems like the Parry team always gets to play on lower boards than the Lohrman - Hiltunen team when we have the same record...weird.
